Mazurka från Hammar

This Mazurka från Hammar is a tune that goes back to the heyday of mazurka popularity in the mid-1800s.

Hammar itself is a very small village near the town of Eda, in the province of Värmland.  Actually, the whole westernmost section of Värmland, bordering Norway, is called Eda.

This tune comes from the repertoire of Olof Hansson, a fiddler born in Hammar in 1824.

The mazurka is a dance that originated in Poland, first as a folk dance, then as a mainline ballroom dance.   It became popular worldwide in the mid- to late 1800s, and mazurka tunes found their way into fiddle repertoires in many countries.
