Spel-Stinas Polska

Spel-Stinas Polska is a memorable tune from the repertoire of Anna-Kajsa Norman, known to musicians as Spel-Stina (“Fiddler Kristina”)

She was born in 1820, the daughter of an outstanding fiddler.  It was unusual at the time for women to take up the instrument for social reasons, and she is just one of a handful of 19th-century women to be still remembered today.  She died in 1903.

This is perhaps her best-known tune.   Although full of 16th notes, the dance rhythm suggests the 8th-note Bondpolska.

Here is a YouTube recording of a Gästrikland fiddlers’ team playing it.
