{"id":669,"date":"2021-09-24T21:38:17","date_gmt":"2021-09-24T21:38:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/folksweden.com\/?page_id=669"},"modified":"2021-09-24T21:55:46","modified_gmt":"2021-09-24T21:55:46","slug":"langbacka-jans-ganglat","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/folksweden.com\/index.php\/langbacka-jans-ganglat\/","title":{"rendered":"L\u00e5ngbacka Jans G\u00e5ngl\u00e5t"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-page\" data-elementor-id=\"669\" class=\"elementor elementor-669\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-5a519bf elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"5a519bf\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-33 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-41ddfc7\" data-id=\"41ddfc7\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-98d3dce elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"98d3dce\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>L\u00e5ngbacka Jans G\u00e5ngl\u00e5t<\/strong> is one of the best-known Uppland fiddle tunes, even in other areas of Sweden.<\/p><p>\u00a0 L\u00e5ngbacka Jan, or Jan Persson, lived from 1800 to 1880.\u00a0 In his youth he was celebrated as perhaps the best fiddler in his home area of Rasbo.\u00a0 He was reputed to have magical powers with his music, and amazing stories were told about him.<\/p><p>\u00a0 One of the most remarkable stories concerned a man who was trying to get a team of horses to pull a wagon loaded with hay up the steep hill where he lived.\u00a0 \u00a0The horses were just not strong enough to pull the weight.\u00a0 He asked L\u00e5ngbacka Jan for assistance.\u00a0 Jan had the farmer unhitch the horses, and instead he hitched a chicken to the wagon.\u00a0 Then he sat on the front of the wagon, and played a tune, which\u00a0 made the chicken pull the wagon up the hill as though it were as light as a feather.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-33 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-a7017f7\" data-id=\"a7017f7\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-33 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-4b63855\" data-id=\"4b63855\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-47a73d2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"47a73d2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It is not known for sure what tune he played, but it may have been this tune, now called\u00a0<strong>L\u00e5ngbacka Jans G\u00e5ngl\u00e5t<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0 There are different stories about why L\u00e5ngbacka Jan stopped playing the fiddle.\u00a0 \u00a0One is that a boy touched his fiddle once, and it started playing by itself, and Jan had to smash it to get it to stop.\u00a0 Another says he recognized the devil as one of the dancers he was playing for one time.<\/p><p>\u00a0 The most likely, though, is that he had moved to the city of Uppsala at a time when there was a strong conservative religious revival.\u00a0 He was told that fiddling was sinful, so he quit playing to avoid eternal damnation.<\/p><p>\u00a0 Anyway, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8puicawMLqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> is a YouTube video of L\u00e5ngbacka Jans G\u00e5ngl\u00e5t played by an unrehearsed group of musicians at an &#8220;allspel&#8221;
