\u00a0\u00a0Flickornas Dans p\u00e5 Kyrkog\u00e5rden\u00a0<\/strong>translates as “The Dance of the Girls in the Churchyard” (Graveyard).\u00a0 \u00a0It is a very nice, lyrical waltz, and preserved from the playing of a Sm\u00e5land fiddler, Nils Pettersson, from Tors\u00e5s.<\/p>

\u00a0 The title refers to an old legend in Sm\u00e5land.\u00a0 \u00a0The traditional beginning of the Christmas morning celebration was called “Julotta”, and took place before dawn at the church.\u00a0<\/p>

\u00a0 The story is that three girls went early to the Julotta, and actually arrived at the church at midnight.\u00a0 Perhaps because they had so much time to wait, and perhaps because they were so cold, they decided to dance in the graveyard around the church.<\/p>

\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

But once they started dancing, they were unable to stop, and were compelled to continue.\u00a0 \u00a0When the church congregation arrived for the Julotta, they found the girls lying on the ground, dead.<\/p>

\u00a0 According to tradition, it is always dangerous to come to the church too early at Christmas.\u00a0 You see, the dead have their own Julotta before the living, and they do not like to be disturbed.\u00a0 If you go into the church during their celebration, you risk being killed by them.<\/p>

\u00a0 To the left is a picture from the churchyard at Eksh\u00e4rad church in V\u00e4rmland.\u00a0 \u00a0It has a tradition dating back to the 1700’s of having handmade iron crosses as grave markers.<\/p>
