\u00a0\u00a0This\u00a0Nigvals fr\u00e5n Ovansj\u00f6\u00a0<\/strong>has a special meaning to me because of how I learned it.<\/p>

Ovansj\u00f6 is a small district in the province of G\u00e4strikland.\u00a0 \u00a0A\u00a0nigvals<\/strong> is just a waltz that is played smoothly for a dance variation that encourages bending of the knees a little more than an ordinary waltz.<\/p>

I learned this tune from Stig Sj\u00f6din, a fine fiddler from Storvik, a town belonging to the Ovansj\u00f6 district.\u00a0 \u00a0He was a miller, running a water-powered mill that had been in his family for generations.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Stig’s grandfather played fiddle and nyckelharpa.\u00a0 \u00a0Stig himself played fiddle, taking up nyckelharpa in his 50’s when a bandsaw accident reduced the feeling in his left hand.\u00a0 \u00a0Eventually he was able to play fiddle again, but also continued to play G\u00e4strikland tunes on the harpa.<\/p>

\u00a0 Among my American friends, we call this Stig’s Waltz.<\/p>
