Tobogubben is one of the most commonly played tunes in the province of Uppland, especially on the nyckelharpa.
The name is in honor of the greatest of nyckelharpa players himself, Eric Sahlström. The title translates as “the old man from Tobo”, which is the town where he lived. Sahlström did not compose the tune, and normally called it “Farfars Polska” (Grandfather’s Polska)
The tune is an 8th-note polska in the key of F, and is played as either a bondpolska or a hambo for dancing.
Here is a video recorded in 2017 at a festival, with many musicians playing Tobogubben together, mostly on nyckelharpa and fiddle.
